I Depend On Your Smile
I depend on you
to get me through,
Your smile is what
gives me a touch,
A touch of love
so tender and sweet,
A touch of love
from head to feet.
I feel refreshed
when I’m with you,
One glance
takes me to
Another day
fresh and new;
I can see my life
forever with you.
You look my way,
I’m put back
To a whole,
nothing I lack.
Your presence calls
for celebration,
I have joy
and rejuvenation!
You are the fresh air
that I breathe,
No sweeter joy
can I conceive.
This is why
I depend on you,
Your smile, your smile,
it gets me through.

With Friends Like Mine
My back is sore,
I don’t know if I can take anymore
Of the knives that hit me,
Why are all my friends like enemies?
Why do they appear to be sincere?
But when darkness appears
They turn like the hands of time,
I’m telling you with friends like mine…
My enemies don’t get the opportunity,
They have to take a number to get next to me,
Because my friends get all of my time;
All the hating, backstabbing, and lies.
Their feelings are wounded from the sight of me,
I have to keep in mind that I can’t just be me
Or they’ll think I’m trying to out-do or out-shine;
Then here come the schemes along with the lies.
Because that’s the only way they can deal
With then envy that they feel,
They have to create a plot and design a plan
To break my spirits the best way they can.
Only so that they can feel better,
Thinking they can ruin me, makes them feel clever.
Or if they aren’t busy doing this,
For my kindness and attention they persist.
And if I dare to not have enough time,
Here goes with the hating and the lies.
It soothes their ego to receive all of my attention, you see,
They get bent out of shape as if I’m a celebrity.
Sometimes I feel like I am, the way I duck and dodge words,
Careful not to say this, look like this, or do this—it’s absurd.
I feel sorry for my enemies; they’d better stand back
Because my friends will smell competition and declare an attack.
My friends cease to acknowledge that I am aware of their conniving ways,
So I let them run around me in circles and not one word I say.
Until they bump heads with each other and fall with exasperation,
Again I stand untouched and firm from patience.
I’m sure we’ll engage in internal warfare again,
And once more my enemies will become my friends.

When You're Feeling Alone
When you’re feeling alone
and a friendly smile is nowhere around,
Your hope has faded
and a sign of affection cannot be found.
You have search endlessly
for someone to make you feel whole,
Your life has become empty,
isolated, and cold.
You turn to the Lord,
and pray with all your might,
You pray until your soul bleeds,
pleading with the Lord all night.
Though you know He hears, He cares,
and He is going to work it out,
Will that day ever come;
in your heart you still doubt.
Because His voice was not heard,
His face you did not see,
You long for the assurement
that what was said will be.
But if you imagine the sky so blue,
no eyes its color exist,
The wind blowing the clouds against your face,
leaving a gentle mist.
A chair formed from the clouds
and there the Lord will be,
Seated and waiting anxiously
to hear your plea.
You kneel down before Him crying,
“Lord, what shall I do?”
“Nothing,” He calmly says,
“I’ve already worked it out for you.”
So you lay your head on His lap,
as He caresses your pain,
The world is far away,
and you are free from its strains.
A peacefulness surges through your soul,
and you are whole once again;
There in the comforting arms of the Lord,
your only true friend.
So you leave this peaceful place
and return to the battle that awaits you,
Knowing you do not fight alone,
His protective hand is always on you.
